"Do you know when you'll be speaking to Haim?" an inquiry reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're far from alone. A host of celebrated supporters have openly petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos frequently show them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"And thus all are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record came out of a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words track departures and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed resilience called for a new sound – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

Yet Haim will consistently be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "There is no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
