Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – How a Plastic Axe Bridged Generations Among Rock Fans

It has been two decades since Guitar Hero first launched across the Atlantic, providing everyday gamers the tools to become rock legends. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing someone who's nailed Free Bird’s four-minute instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Developed by the developers, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes scrolling down the display synchronized to a song. Each riff corresponded to particular chords, creating the sensation of an authentic live show.

The studio previously tried its hand in the music genre prior to teaming up with the publisher, later purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they established the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar series that had a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists featured, showcasing classic groups to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, recalls the initial financial challenges of licensing the songs – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music because the cost prohibitive,” he explains. “Even with the necessary permissions alone, it proved extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were fairly certain it would fail. But once Guitar Hero became a hit, album purchases airtime were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “One of the amazing things was how many mothers and fathers reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Northern Irish group one featured act had Never Too Late in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist remembers the way the game brought older hits back into vogue: “The game provided a larger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered outdated material, but then when it was included in the title young people were finding it, abruptly it was cool. That legitimised it, eliminating the outdated label. It provided all our music a new life.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album was still unreleased stateside, meaning Guitar Hero served as a primary platform of discovery for the band during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “Their crew were playing the song on the tour bus, and several knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Influence

Rock’s heavyweight names soon capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in specialized game editions centered around their music collections and related lore, imagery and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the group greater revenue compared to their studio albums. It sold well over 500,000 copies upon release, and demand for their songs saw an increase of up to 40% during an era as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed fanaticism among its fans. Earlier this year, a streamer achieved an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult power-metal song popularized through Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with almost identical gameplay and extensive personalization features. The song is difficult even in the hardest setting, let alone performed at increased tempo while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated it took nine months to accomplish.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you should pick up actual weapons and enlist,” notes musician the artist.

The band had already wrapped up a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, yet he explains it made them a household name. “I remember the record label informing us that our selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded when we next toured, and we performed right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

In fact, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it has threatened to eclipsing all other accomplishments. Last year, the song was used in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I felt differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only hear a single track, it’s totally cool – each person has their own musical journey and I’m glad we played a role in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Legacy from the Iconic Controller

The best marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, extends beyond mere transactions – it evokes a desire. Was the game able to tap into that? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive urge to make music, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to do it”.

The majority installments came out in just a five-year period between 2005 and 2010, featuring spin-offs like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. After that, the publisher’s interest on peripherals died down, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles like the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community active, with set to be a new product from the founders on the way. A new studio has begun work on their first rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are both involved in advisory roles. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry following the classic?

“Our team believed those games could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. There’s no reason for it to continue for future fans.”
