In the dying moments, sheer ecstasy broke out for Chelsea and interim manager Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández forced home a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola in a state of despair and provided the temporary Chelsea manager a truly golden moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane was the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch in class, making the memory of Fernández's crucial intervention one to cherish the 40-year-old in his dotage.

A Glaring Contrast in Experience

On the home bench was the most decorated manager of his time, a man with 40 trophies for elite clubs Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, taking charge of his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, stood a one-time trainer at non-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had worked in City's own academy and arrived to make his senior managerial bow after being temporarily promoted from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a slew of absences, most notably Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task began as a mission that seemed close-to-impossible.

“Rollercoaster” was the word McFarlane used to describe his experience since being thrust into the role.

Another element of his game plan was to disrupt at every turn. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea slowed at a dead ball, a sure sign the hosts' rhythm was being broken up and the Guardiola plan was being frustrated.
